Calculating Metal Clay Shrinkage

Due to differences in the binder and size and type of metal particles, different metal clays will shrink at different rates. You can calculate the finished size of a metal clay piece using the correct shrinkage rate for your clay. Be sure to verify the shrinkage rate for your clay before using these calculators.

Note that these calculations can only give an approximate size. The firing temperature and time will affect the shrinkage.

The length and width of a piece will usually be measured in millimeters (mm) or inches (in). The thickness of a flat piece may also be measured as the height of a small stack of playing cards, mat board, or craft sticks—these are often used to roll out the clay.

There are several kinds of metal clays, and they shrink at different rates. If you measure the size of your clay piece, this calculator will give you the approximate size of the finished piece once it has been fired.

Note: The thickness of playing cards, mat board, and craft sticks may vary. This calculator uses typical values when converting between units.

To convert between different units, first enter the number then change the units.

Calculator to Size Metal Clay Pieces

In some cases, you may have a particular size in mind for the finished piece. This calculator allows you to start with the size of the finished (fired) piece, then calculate the size for making the piece in unfired metal clay.
